This 21-day tour, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s Bharat Yatra, offers a panoramic view of the nation's unity in diversity.

Spanning eight weeks, Bharat Darshan serves to acquaint the trainees with various facets of India, including public and private sector enterprises, NGOs, armed services, media, urban bodies, and Parliamentary proceedings. The schedule of the IAS Bharat Darshan is meticulously crafted to ensure that by the end of 21 days, the young civil servant would have gained a comprehensive understanding of the country’s diverse cultural and geographical expanse.

Exploring the Bharat Dharshan

As a part of their Phase I training, the IAS Officer Trainees are generally taken on a Winter Study Tour, also known as Bharat Darshan. The trainees are divided into 9-10 groups, each following a pre-designated itinerary that covers different attachments. These groups travel across the length and breadth of the country, gaining invaluable insights into the ecological, historical, and cultural backgrounds of various regions of India.

The trainees also get the opportunity to visit various institutions of national importance such as the RBI, SEBI, and numerous NGOs, thereby gaining a deeper understanding of their roles and functions in the nation. Here's a closer look at some of the attachments that form part of the Bharat Darshan tour.

  • Army Attachment

As part of the army attachment, the trainees are taken to Jammu and Kashmir for a week-long immersive experience. This attachment serves to familiarize the officer trainees with the functioning of the Indian Armed Forces and the interplay between civil administration and defence services.

  • IAF Attachment

For the IAF attachment, the trainees are taken to an Air Force station in Bidar, Karnataka, or another location in India.

  • Navy Attachment

The Navy attachment takes the trainees to a naval base in the country, such as Mumbai or Vishakhapatnam. This 2-3 day attachment may also include a visit to the Indian Coast Guard.

  • Attachment with NGOs

The NGO attachment provides trainees with an opportunity to visit an NGO and gain first-hand experience of their contributions and practices across various societal domains.

  • Attachment in Naxal-affected/ Insurgency District

This attachment takes the trainees to a tribal village or Naxal-hit areas, helping them understand the challenges of governance in regions affected by insurgency.

  • Public Sector Attachment

The Public Sector attachment includes visits to institutions like the RBI, SEBI, NTPC, or other public sector undertakings. This experience enables the officer trainees to learn about the managerial practices and operational dynamics of these organisations.

  • Attachment with District Administration

This attachment aims to provide a deeper understanding of the administration and implementation of welfare schemes at the district level and within urban local bodies.

  • Attachment with Forest/ Island Administration

The trainees visit hill areas, islands, and northeastern Indian regions, often considered complex terrain regions, to understand the functioning of local administration in these challenging terrains.

  • NSG and Special Task Force (STF) Attachment

This unique opportunity allows officer trainees to meet authorities from the NSG and STF, who are responsible for the nation's security.

  • Miscellaneous Attachments & Local Sightseeing

In addition to these, officer trainees also get the opportunity to visit National Parks, Universities, the NDRF, and other institutions of national importance in India.

What follows Bharat Darshan?

Post-Bharat Darshan, officer trainees undergo a week-long attachment at the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies (BPST) at the Lok Sabha Secretariat in Delhi. This attachment provides them with a comprehensive understanding of Parliamentary Proceedings.

LBSNAA offers a platform that allows officer trainees to experience the best administrative practices and provides exposure to both the diversity of India and the challenges of governance.
