The Attitude of Service & Civil Servants - Understanding the Role of Civil Servants in India

In the democratic setting of India, power resides in the hands of the people. This power is manifested through elected representatives who govern for a specific tenure. The face of this government is its civil servants, their behavior towards the populace is a mirror of the state's attitude. Civil servants form the core of our nation, acting as partners in implementing the government's policies. They are chosen through a rigorous competitive nationwide examination, trained for administrative competence, and groomed to maintain political neutrality while serving the people. They are expected to embody a spirit of community service. The civil service forms a critical pillar of good governance in our country. The significance of civil services in our country arises from several factors:

  1. Providing service to society
  2. Offering advice to political leaders
  3. Formulating effective policies
  4. Coordinating between various governance institutions.

The civil service is a vital institution that significantly impacts the lives of the state's citizens. There are countless ways to earn a living, but being a civil servant with a service-oriented attitude is arguably the most gratifying. There is a unique fulfillment in service, an act of giving without expecting anything in return. A person who serves is not only beneficial to society but also transcends daily struggles and sorrows, as serving others is the highest form of self-purification. Many of us have experienced disappointment when our expectations are not met. We often grumble about life's perceived injustices. Suffering is inevitable when we harbor expectations, especially of rewards. We tend to believe we deserve more than what life has offered us, and when reality falls short of our expectations, we are prone to experiencing pain and distress.

The Significance of Service

Service bestows a different understanding of effort and reward. It puts us in a position where we offer without expecting anything in return. Any reward that comes our way is a bonus. Service lifts our often immature minds to a more mature and balanced state. A person who enjoys serving others realizes that it brings love and connection more easily than seeking it consciously. Our happiness, fulfillment, and satisfaction hinge on our comprehension of the concept of "service".

Life can be a joyous journey if we adopt service as our attitude and a way of life. Our current political, economic, and social systems often miss this point. We need to shift our focus from 'taking' to 'serving'. Building a nation with a 'give and take' attitude is challenging. Service always leaves a positive imprint after the act. We can initiate change by performing simple acts of service every day. A few kind words, a supportive gesture, a selfless act can go a long way in making our lives more meaningful and abundant. Civil servants have numerous ways to serve society. Serving our fellow human beings paves the path to supreme happiness. We hope this sets you in the right direction in your preparation. Best of luck!
