An Introduction to the Chite Lui River

• Nestled in an alluvial valley, the Chite Lui River lies approximately 1,000 meters above sea level.
• The river originates from the Bawngkawn range in the northern part of Aizawl, Mizoram.
• It has a length of around 20 km before it merges with the Tuirial River.
• The river plays a crucial role in the lives and culture of the people of Mizoram. This is evident from the numerous songs and stories that highlight its importance.

The Pollution of the Chite Lui River

Factors Leading to the Pollution of the Chite Lui River:

1. Unregulated Urbanization: Rapid urbanization in Aizawl has given rise to haphazard construction and encroachments, which have disrupted the river's natural flow.
2. Encroachment and Deforestation: The encroachment of the river by establishments like residences, shops, garages, and food joints has resulted in the loss of natural vegetation and increased soil erosion.
3. Improper Waste Disposal: The river has become a dumping ground for various types of waste from the urban population. Businesses in the vicinity dump untreated waste into the river, including vehicle wash runoff and dirty water.

Concerns Arising from the Pollution:

1. Damage to Aquatic Life and Biodiversity: The pollution has had adverse effects on the river’s aquatic life, biodiversity , and overall health.
2. Health Risks: The polluted state of the river poses health risks to those who rely on it for various purposes.
3. Impact on Livelihoods: The livelihoods of people living along the riverbanks and depending on it are severely affected.

Efforts by Citizens to Save the River:

• The Zoram Research Foundation launched a campaign in 2007 to raise awareness and gather support.
• Local residents and volunteers actively participate in periodic campaigns to clean the river banks.
• Plastic waste, which constitutes about 80% of the waste retrieved, has been a major focus. A noteworthy achievement is the construction of a plastic road using collected polythene waste in Reiek village.
• The Save Mizo Rivers campaign was initiated by retired bureaucrat Lalnunmawia Chuaungo.

The Way Forward:

• There's a need for more initiatives to raise public awareness about the river's importance.
• More proactive measures are needed to demonstrate greater seriousness towards the issue.
• Implementing solid waste management measures can help prevent further pollution.
