Understanding DeitY

DeitY, or the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, was formerly known as the Department of Information Technology. It got its new name in 2012. In 2016, DeitY was elevated to become a full-fledged Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, separated from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

Key Responsibilities of DeitY

Here are the primary responsibilities of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY):

  • Formulating policies related to information technology, Electronics, and the Internet
  • Promoting internet and IT-enabled services
  • Assisting other departments in fostering E-Governance, E-Commerce, E- Medicine, E-Infrastructure, etc.
  • Handling matters related to Cyber Laws
  • Taking initiatives to bridge the Digital Divide
  • Initiating measures for the development of the Hardware/Software industry, including knowledge-based enterprises, and promoting IT exports and industry competitiveness

DeitY's Goals

The Department is primarily tasked with shaping the IT and e-governance landscape. The objectives of DeitY are as follows:

  • e-Government: Provision of e-infrastructure for e-service delivery
  • e-Industry: Promoting the electronics hardware manufacturing and IT-ITeS industry
  • e-Learning: Supporting the development of e-Skills and Knowledge network
  • e-Security: Ensuring the security of India’s cyberspace
  • Internet Governance: Strengthening India’s role in Global Platforms of Internet Governance
