English Literature Optional for UPSC Exam - Tips & Strategies | Testbook.com

"In my stars I am above thee, but be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon 'em" - Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare.

There was a time when English Literature was considered an optional subject only for those who had pursued it during their graduation. However, since 2014, this restriction has been lifted, opening up the subject to anyone with a keen interest in it. Many aspirants opt for English Literature as it offers a refreshing change from the rigorous UPSC preparation. However, like any other subject, it requires a well-planned strategy. In this article, we present a guide on how to prepare for English Literature as an optional subject in the UPSC exam.

Preparation Tips for English Literature Optional in UPSC Exam

  • An inherent interest in literature is a must.
  • Covering the entire syllabus should be your primary focus.
  • It is advisable to read through the entire text at least once.
  • Begin with studying the texts, followed by the history of literature.
  • Regular practice of answer writing is essential.
  • Although English Literature demands a rich vocabulary, make sure to use simple language in your answers. The examiner is interested in your understanding of the text and the socio-political context of its creation, not in your ability to use fancy words.
  • Strategy for Novels and Drama : Read the text in its entirety to understand the context. For in-depth analysis, refer to ‘Worldview edition’ or ‘Norton critical edition’ . For Indian texts, search the internet for relevant analysis or criticism.
  • Strategy for Poetry : Memorize certain lines from each poem to enhance your answers.
  • Strategy for the History of Literature Section : The following books are recommended:

History of Literature by Louis Cazamian

The Routledge History of Literature in English by Ronald Carter & John McRae

A New History Of English Literature by Bhim S Dahiya

  • The question paper will contain two unseen passages. While you can use your judgment to answer the questions, you can also refer to ‘Practical Criticism’ by Oxford University Press for guidance.
  • To understand various literary terms, you can refer to ‘A Glossary of Literary Terms’ by M.H Abrams .
  • For a deeper understanding of literary theories, you can refer to ‘Literary Theory Today’ by Pramod K Nayar.
