Thorium - An Overview from Indian Perspective | Testbook.com

Thorium holds immense significance for India as it could potentially be the answer to the country's escalating energy needs. Although Thorium in itself is not a fissile material (a material capable of sustaining a fission reaction in nuclear reactors to generate energy), it is a fertile material that can transform into the fissile material Uranium (U-233). With the growing concerns of climate change, the world is under pressure to transition towards renewable energy sources. Currently, India is heavily reliant on Thermal power to meet its energy demands. However, Nuclear energy can provide a viable alternative to thermal energy. For instance, France, one of the most developed nations globally, fulfills 80% of its energy requirements through nuclear energy.

This topic will serve as a useful resource for candidates preparing for the IAS Exam .

Thorium – Abundant Reserves in India

Currently, Uranium is the primary fuel used in Nuclear reactors to generate energy. However, India only possesses 2% of the world’s Uranium reserves. In contrast, India is home to 25% of the World’s Thorium reserves, amounting to approximately 400 thousand tonnes. Owing to India's exclusion from International Nuclear trade, it had to focus on developing technologies that could exploit Thorium to generate energy in Nuclear reactors. Therefore, Homi J Bhabha, the father of the Indian Nuclear Program, envisioned a 3 Stage Nuclear Power Program in 1954, aimed at utilizing India’s vast Thorium reserves.

Applications of Thorium

Thorium has various uses, some of which are mentioned below.

  1. It can be utilized in nuclear reactors to fulfill a country's energy needs.
  2. It is used in radiometric dating.
  3. It acts as an alloying element in magnesium.
  4. It is used to coat tungsten wire, which is used in electrical equipment.

The above details will help candidates in their preparation for the UPSC 2021 .
