  • The meeting was attended by approximately 200 delegates from various countries, all gathered in Varanasi.
  • The meeting took place against the backdrop of several global developmental challenges, including economic slowdown, debt distress, climate change impacts, pollution, biodiversity loss, increasing poverty and inequality, food and energy insecurity, global supply-chain disruptions, and geopolitical conflicts.

Key Outcomes of the Meeting:

  • India emphasized the need for reforms in multilateral financial institutions, especially the expansion of eligibility criteria, to ensure that “finance is accessible to those in need.”
  • India also advocated for a pro-planet lifestyle, recalling the launch of Mission LiFE in 2022, and underscored the importance of gender equality and women empowerment in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • The G-20 development ministers’ conclave also reinforced the Voice of the Global South Summit that India had previously hosted.
  • The Prime Minister also addressed the issue of the global digital divide and discussed necessary measures to bridge this gap.
