The Garuda Shakti exercise involves the Special Forces of the Indian Army (Para Special Force) and the Indonesian Army.
This bilateral military exercise between India and Indonesia was initiated in 2012.
The most recent iteration of this bilateral exercise, the 6th Garuda Shakti exercise, was held in 2018 in Bandung, Indonesia, from 19th February to 4th March.
The Garuda Shakti exercise encompasses:
  • Counter-terrorism operations,
  • Close quarter combat, and
  • Other special operations.
The primary objective of this India-Indonesia bilateral exercise is to strengthen trust and cooperation between the two armies.
The fifth iteration of the Garuda Shakti exercise was conducted in India, while the fourth one took place in Magelang, Indonesia.

  4. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Indonesia in 2018, establishing a new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to advance the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and India. This visit resulted in the signing of 15 agreements/MoUs between the two countries.
  5. India's Former Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited Indonesia in October 2018 for bilateral defence talks.
