Understanding H3N2 Virus Infection: A Comprehensive Overview

We delve into the important topic of the H3N2 Virus Infection, a matter of significant concern, on our daily feature on All India Radio News. IAS exam aspirants may find this information useful for their preparation.

Today's topic of discussion is the: H3N2 Virus Infection .

Participants:

  1. Mr. Rajesh Leekh, AIR correspondent
  2. Dr. Raman G. Khedkar, Former Head of Epidemiology, ICMR

Context: There have been increasing instances of H3N2 Influenza across the country.

Historical background:

  • Influenza virus is classified into four types: A, B, C and D. However, types A and B are primarily responsible for the seasonal respiratory illnesses we experience almost every year . The H3N2 infection typically lasts for 5-7 days, with the fever subsiding after the initial 3 days.
  • The H3N2 virus usually circulates among pigs before infecting humans. When these viruses infect humans, they are referred to as “variant” viruses.

Transmission process:

  • The H3N2 virus is transmitted from an infected pig to humans through droplets released by the pig during a cough or sneeze.
  • The virus can also spread when droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person land on the nose or mouth of another individual, who then inhales these droplets.
  • Certain groups are at a higher risk of H3N2 infection, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women, children under 5 years, and individuals with long-term health conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart disease, weakened immune systems, and neurological or neurodevelopmental conditions.

Symptoms:

  • Symptoms of H3N2v infection resemble those of seasonal flu viruses and can include fever, respiratory symptoms like cough and runny nose, and potentially other symptoms such as body aches, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea.

Preventive measures:

  • The primary way to prevent the spread of the H3N2 virus is to limit human interaction as soon as symptoms of infection appear.
  • Avoid close contact with anyone displaying flu-like symptoms.
  • Refrain from going outside if you exhibit flu symptoms unless absolutely necessary.
  • Seek medical attention and take prescribed medications if you exhibit signs of the flu.
  • If you are coughing or sneezing, cover your nose and mouth with your elbow if you do not have a mask.
  • Avoid touching the face, especially the nose, eyes, and mouth, without first washing or sanitizing your hands.
  • Do not self-medicate with antibiotics. These are only effective against bacterial infections and have no effect on the H3N2 influenza virus. Always consult a healthcare professional before starting any medication.
