Indian Neutrino Observatory (INO): An Introduction and Location Insight

The Union cabinet has given its approval for the establishment of the Indian Neutrino Observatory (INO) - a research facility dedicated to studying fundamental particles known as neutrinos. The observatory is set to be located in the Bodi West Hills region of the Theni district, approximately 110 kilometres west of Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

  1. The INO project involves the construction of an underground laboratory. Initially, the project was to be located in the Nilgiris, but due to its proximity to a tiger habitat, it was later moved to a cavern under a rocky mountain in the Bodi West Hills.
  2. The project will include the Inter-Institutional Centre for High Energy Physics (IICHEP) and the Iron Calorimeter Detector (ICAL).
  3. Approval for the construction of a magnetized Iron Calorimeter has also been granted. This will aid in studying the properties of the neutrino, specifically, the mass hierarchy in various types of neutrino. It will be the world's largest, weighing over 50,000 tonnes.
  4. The project is jointly supported by the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Atomic Energy.

Neutrinos: The Ghost Particles

Neutrinos are elementary, weakly interacting subatomic particles with half-integer spin. They are electrically neutral and belong to the lepton family. First proposed by Swiss scientist Wolfgang Pauli, neutrinos are the second most abundant particles in the universe, only second to photons, which constitute light. Neutrinos are similar to the more familiar electron, but with one crucial difference: neutrinos do not carry electric charge. This makes them unaffected by the electromagnetic forces that act on electrons.

  1. Neutrinos are extremely light.
  2. They are either nearly massless or have very little mass.
  3. They are neutral particles that interact only with the weak nuclear force.

Three Types of Neutrinos

  1. "Electron neutrino" associated with the electron
  2. "Muon neutrino"
  3. "Tau neutrino"
