The combined India-China military exercise began in 2007, but was put on hold for five years before being restarted in 2013. Previous versions have taken place in Yunnan, Belgaum, Sichuan, and Pune.

The joint military exercise “Hand-in-Hand” began in Kunming, China in 2007, and its second edition was held in Belgaum, Karnataka, India. It was, however, put on hold for the foreseeable future. This article discusses the significance of one of India’s big military drills with China from the perspective of a UPSC examination.

Significance of India China Hand in Hand Exercise

• Hand-in-Hand is an annual exercise that takes place as part of India’s and China’s military diplomacy and interaction.
• The simulation involves tactical activities in a UN-mandated worldwide counterinsurgency/counterterrorism scenario.
• The purpose of the exercise is to practise coordinated planning and execution of counter-terrorism operations in semi-urban terrain.
• Two tactical exercises are scheduled for the training: one on counter-terrorism scenarios and the other on humanitarian and disaster relief (HADR) operations.

Defense Cooperation Between India and China

• On November 13, 2018, the ninth India-China Annual Defence and Security Dialogue (ADSD) was held in Beijing.
• In February 2016, Visakhapatnam held the International Fleet Review. Two Chinese naval ships participated in the exercise.
• The INS Kolkata and the INS Shakti, two Indian naval ships, participated in the International Fleet Review in Qingdao, Shandong, in April 2019, as part of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy’s 70th anniversary festivities.
• A High-Level Dialogue Mechanism on Counter-Terrorism and Security exists between India and China. In September 2016, the mechanism convened for the first time in Beijing.
