India's Message to Myanmar: Stop Tur Hoarding

There have been several developments that led to this move from the Indian government. Here's a quick rundown of the situation:

  • The price of tur and urad has seen a sharp surge in the Indian market. This increase in cost is significantly higher than the Minimum Support Price (MSP) set by the government.
  • The Indian government has taken up this issue seriously and held discussions with those who import pulses from Myanmar.
  • The importers have been warned against intentionally reducing imports from Myanmar.
  • The government has also sent out a warning to private traders in Myanmar to refrain from hoarding these essential commodities.
  • If the situation doesn't improve, the Indian government has expressed its readiness to take the G2G (Government-to-Government) route for importing these commodities.
  • Major suppliers have been exploiting the shortage in India, leading to a firm price trend in recent months.
  • According to the bilateral agreement, India has committed to import 0.25 MT urad and 0.1 MT of tur annually from Myanmar from 2021-22 till 2025-26.
  • India imports approximately 15% of its annual pulses consumption.
  • The estimated pulses production in India for the crop year 2022-23 is recorded to be 27.81 MT.
  • In March 2023, a committee was set up by the department to monitor the stock of tur held by various entities. This committee works in close coordination with the state governments.

About Minimum Support Price (MSP):
The Minimum Support Price, or MSP, is a pricing mechanism set by the government for specific agricultural products. If the open market prices fall below the MSP, the government directly purchases these products from the farmers. You can learn more about MSP here.
