Functions of the Indian Trade Service (ITS)

1. Implementation of various trade regulations and policies such as the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992; Safeguard Measures (Quantitative Restrictions) Rules, 2012; Foreign Trade Policy (FTP), 2009-2014; and the ITC (HS) Classification of Export and Import Items, 2012.

Training of Probationers in the Indian Trade Service (ITS)

Training of ITS officers is conducted in two stages:

1. Foundation Course Training – This is conducted at national academies including LBSNAA.
2. Probationary Professional Training – This is conducted at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi and lasts for 8-9 months.

Career Opportunities in the Indian Trade Service (ITS)

1. In the Ministry of Trade and Commerce, ITS cadre officers begin their career as an Under Secretary. They can subsequently be promoted to the positions of Deputy Secretary, Joint Secretary, and Additional Secretary.
2. ITS officers also have the chance to serve on deputation with foreign missions, WTO, and UN.
