Kohinoor Diamond: A Comprehensive Guide for UPSC Exam - Testbook

The Kohinoor diamond, a gem of extraordinary historical significance, was handed over to the British by the Sikh King Duleep Singh. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Supreme Court of India seeking the repatriation of the Kohinoor from Britain. However, on April 18, 2016, the Solicitor General representing the Government of India refrained from any attempts to reclaim the Kohinoor diamond. The rationale was that if they were successful, it could set a precedent for other nations to stake claim to artifacts in Indian museums, thereby jeopardizing the status of Indian museums.

The Controversy Surrounding the Ownership of Kohinoor Diamond

The ownership of the Kohinoor diamond is a subject of much debate, with India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran all laying claim to it. The diamond has a complex history, having been in possession of various rulers like the Kakatiyas, Alauddin Khilji, Babur, Shah Jahan, Nadir Shah, Ahmad Shah Durrani, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, before finally being handed over to the British Monarch.

Where is the Kohinoor Diamond Now?

The Kohinoor diamond is currently in the possession of the British Monarch, Queen Elizabeth. It is on public display in the Jewel House at the Tower of London, attracting millions of visitors each day. The diamond was given to Queen Victoria after the British annexed Punjab in 1849. The British Government has consistently rejected claims from other countries, stating that the diamond was obtained through the Treaty of Lahore.

The Curse Associated with the Kohinoor Diamond

The Kohinoor diamond has earned a reputation as a cursed gem within the British Royal family, believed to bring misfortune to any man who wears it. This belief stems from the turbulent history of the diamond, which has changed hands numerous times due to conflicts between different rulers.
