LBSNAA: History and Interesting Facts | testbook.com

The moment of triumph when an individual clears the UPSC civil services exam is just the beginning. Following this achievement, the successful aspirants, now referred to as probationers, are taken to a picturesque location for their training. This place is none other than The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), nestled in the serene hill station of Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. LBSNAA is not just a training academy but a place brimming with history. Let's delve into the past of LBSNAA and uncover some intriguing facts about it.

The genesis of LBSNAA goes back to 15 th April 1958, when Govind Ballabh Pant, the then Home Minister, announced the establishment of a National Academy of Administration in the Lok Sabha. Subsequently, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the IAS Training School in Delhi and the IAS Staff College in Shimla were merged to form the National Academy of Administration at Mussoorie in 1959. The Academy underwent two name changes in the 1970s before finally becoming the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA).

The training for the first batch of officers began in Metcalfe House in April 1959. Later in the year, the Academy was relocated to the Charleville Hotel in Mussoorie, and over the years, several new buildings have been added to the campus.

The Evolution of LBSNAA: A Timeline

Unearthing the Past:

The Charleville Hotel, where the Academy initially began functioning in Mussoorie, holds the distinction of being the first hotel built in the hill station. The main building of the hotel, constructed in 1854 by General Wilkinson, was bought by Mr Hobson in 1861, who started operating it as a hotel.

A major fire in 1984 resulted in the destruction of the main hotel building, which was the central block of LBSNAA at the time.

The hotel has had several notable guests in the past. In March 1905, Queen Mary of the UK (then the Princess of Wales) stayed at the hotel. Renowned British author Rudyard Kipling also resided there in 1888, at the young age of 23.
