Recently, regional languages have gained increased attention among IAS aspirants. While Hindi and Tamil have always been popular choices, languages like Maithili are also being opted for by a few candidates as their mains exam optional subject. In the 2015 UPSC civil services exam, 18 candidates who cleared the exam had chosen Maithili Literature as their optional subject. This trend is not limited to native speakers; even non-native speakers have chosen this language as their optional subject.
The growing popularity of regional languages can be attributed to their relatively less extensive syllabus and the advantage they provide in the aspirant's tenure as IAS officers in a region. With dedicated and focused study, aspirants can aim to score at least 240 out of 500, which could significantly improve their chances if they perform well in their other papers as well.
