The Process of Energy Generation in Biogas Plants

Biogas plants are designed to convert organic substances such as cattle dung, kitchen waste, garden waste, and other bio-degradable materials into biogas. This transformation happens through a process known as anaerobic digestion (AD).

Implementation of Biogas Plants

The NBMMP is implemented across all states and Union Territories under the supervision of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. State Nodal Departments/State Nodal Agencies, Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), and Biogas Development and Training Centers (BDTCs) are the key implementing agencies.

Benefits of Biogas Plants

  1. Biogas plants offer a sustainable solution for households that have the necessary feed material. They can become self-reliant for cooking gas and organic, enriched bio-manure.
  2. These plants can help households save on the cost of LPG cylinder refills and protect them from the harmful effects of indoor air pollution.
  3. The slurry from biogas plants can be used as organic bio-manure, improving crop yield and maintaining soil health.
  4. Biogas plants can bring social benefits to rural families by reducing the effort required to collect fuelwood and mitigating health hazards associated with cooking in smoky kitchens.
  5. Village sanitation can be improved by connecting sanitary toilets with biogas plants.
  6. Biogas plants can also contribute to environmental conservation by preventing the emission of harmful Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) like Methane and Carbon Dioxide.
  7. Setting up a biogas plant can bring significant economic benefits to a household by reducing the cost of LPG cylinder refills and the need for fertilizers.

Targets and Achievements of Biogas Plants

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has set a target to establish 65,180 biogas plants for the year 2017-18 under NBMMP. The Ministry provides subsidies for family-type biogas plants. As of March 2018, approximately 49.5 lakh biogas plants have been installed since the inception of this program.
