The Humble Beginnings of IAS Topper Niranjan Kumar

• Niranjan Kumar was born and brought up in a small village called Pakri Barawan in the Nawada District of Patna, Bihar.
• Coming from a financially challenged family, Niranjan used to help his father, Arvind Kumar, in his small shop selling khaini.
• His father struggled to make ends meet with a monthly income of a mere Rs.5000.
• Despite having four children to provide for, Niranjan's father was determined to ensure they received a good education.
• This led him to enroll Niranjan in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Nawada, a school offering free education.
• Niranjan cleared the entrance test for the school with flying colors and completed his matriculation in 2004.
• He then pursued his intermediate level education from Science College in Patna in 2006. During this time, Niranjan took up tutoring jobs to manage his yearly fee of Rs.1200.
• Later, Niranjan pursued a mining engineering course from IIT-ISM, financing it through a student loan of Rs. 4 lakh.
• He repaid his loan after securing a job as an assistant engineer (mining) at Coal India Ltd. in 2011.
• Niranjan is happily married to Nupur and they are proud parents of a daughter.
• His impressive rank of 728 in the IAS examination secured him a position in the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) .
