What is INS Nirdeshak?

INS Nirdeshak, as a Survey Vessel (Large), is designed to fulfill several crucial objectives:

  • Hydrographic Survey: One of the primary roles of INS Nirdeshak is to conduct comprehensive coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys of ports and navigational channels. These surveys are essential for safe maritime navigation.
  • Data Collection: The vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art hydrographic equipment, allowing it to collect oceanographic and geophysical data. This data serves both defense and civil applications, contributing to scientific research and maritime security.
  • Shallow Water Operations: INS Nirdeshak is optimized for shallow water survey operations, thanks to bow and stern thrusters. These thrusters enhance maneuverability, particularly during low-speed survey operations in shallow waters.
  • Dual Role: In addition to its primary surveying functions, INS Nirdeshak can serve in a limited defense capacity when required. Furthermore, during emergencies, it can function as a hospital ship, providing critical medical support.
