The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 is a pivotal piece of legislation in India, designed with the objective of safeguarding women from sexual harassment in their professional environment. This Act was successfully passed by the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, on 3rd September 2012.
Following its acceptance by the Lok Sabha, the Act was passed by the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, on 26th February 2013. The President gave his assent to the bill on 23rd April 2013, and the Act was enforced from 9th December 2013 onwards. The Act, covering not just working women but also students in schools and colleges and patients in hospitals, mandates employers and local authorities to establish grievance committees to investigate all complaints of sexual harassment. Non-compliance with this requirement can result in a penalty of up to 50,000 rupees imposed on the employer.
