The Smart India Hackathon is an initiative of the Ministry of Education's Innovation Cell and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to tap the ingenuity and technical capability of Indian youth. The hackathon unites students and industry experts with the objective of solving serious problems in the sectors by innovations. The Smart India Hackathon 2024 has brought in numerous new features and initiatives to improve its impact and outreach:

• Expanded Participation: This year too, the country witnessed a larger and enlarged scope and scale with participation from over 3,500 institutions and more than 2 lakh students.
• Diverse problem statements: The themes covered 600 problem statements drawn from government departments, public sector undertakings, private industries, and others.
• Focus on innovation: Sustainability, digital transformation, and indigenous innovation were the lines the themes ran.
• Mentorship programs: There was increased mentorship support from industry experts and academic mentors to guide the participant through the innovation process.
• Grand Finale: The finale of the event was the 36-hour non-stop coding competition both in digital and physical modes across nodal centers.
• Higher funding: Higher prize money and seed funding for the successful teams to take their solution into a viable startup.

Implementation of the Smart India Hackathon

SMART India Hackathon is structured and systematic in its process of implementation:

• Problem Identification: Different government departments, PSUs, and industries identify and present problem statements they are facing.
• Call for Participation: All educational institutions in India are called upon to participate. Students form teams and work towards the problem statements provided.
• Pre Final Round: Submitted ideas are screened, and only a few teams are shortlisted for the grand finale.
• Grand Finale: Teams shortlisted at the respective rounds compete together for 36 hours for solving the problems under the mentorship of experts.
• Judging and Awards: Solutions are judged by the panel of judges based on creativity, feasibility, and the impact. Winning teams receive awards and recognition.
• Post-Hackathon Support: Often post the event winning solutions are incubated and supported for further development and deployment.
