On the 72nd Republic Day of India, the tableau from Uttar Pradesh was declared the best by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju. Despite the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic , the enthusiasm of the states in presenting their tableaux remained undeterred.
The Constitution of India replaced the Government of India Act (1935) and came into effect on 26 January 1950. Since then, we celebrate this day as our Republic Day. Every year, a few tableaux are shortlisted by the Ministry of Defence to be showcased in the annual Republic Day parade at New Delhi’s Rajpath.

Defining a Tableau for Republic Day
A tableau for Republic Day refers to a group of models or figures that are motionless. They represent a scene from a story, history, or depict culture. During Republic Day, states, various departments, and ministries showcase their achievements or culture through their respective tableaux in forms of instruments, costumes, and cutting-edge technology. Each display beautifully brings out the diversity and rich heritage of India.
The Selection Process for Republic Day Tableaux
The government has a comprehensive system to select which tableaux will be displayed during the Republic Day Parade. Ministries and states send their applications to an expert committee comprising experts from various fields such as art, culture, painting, sculpture, music, architecture, and choreography. This Committee evaluates the proposals based on their theme, concept, design, and visual impact before making its recommendations. Three winners are selected post the Republic Day Parade.
In the 2021 Republic Day Parade, Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, and Uttrakhand were felicitated with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd best tableaux of Republic Day respectively. In 2020, the winning states were Assam, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh.
