The mascot for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 was named Miraitowa, a combination of the Japanese words 'Mirai' (Future) and 'Towa' (Eternity). Designed by Ryo Taniguchi, the mascot represents both the old and the new, symbolizing 'innovation from harmony'.

The Olympic motto of 'Faster, Higher, Stronger' was amended to 'Faster, Higher, Stronger- Together' to express unity and solidarity in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The new Latin version of the motto is 'Citius, Altius, Fortius, Communiter.'
