Signing of MoU for Ropeway Construction to Yamunotri Temple

The ropeway is proposed to be built from Janki Chatti in Kharsali leading to Yamunotri Dham. Traditionally, the journey to Yamunotri Dham from Kharsali is covered by a 5.5 km trek, which is quite challenging for many pilgrims.

  • The ropeway project, spanning over 3.38 km, is an ambitious one.
  • Once completed, the ropeway will drastically cut down the travel time from 2-3 hours to a mere 15 – 20 minutes.
  • The estimated cost of the project stands at Rs 166.82 crore.
  • The ropeway is designed for Yamunotri Dham.
  • The ropeway will be of a mono-cable detachable type and will be constructed in line with the European standards prevalent in France and Switzerland.
  • The ropeway will have the capacity to accommodate approximately 500 people per hour.
  • Key Stakeholders: The contract for the project has been signed by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board in collaboration with two private firms, SRM Engineering Solutions Pvt. Ltd. and FIL Industries Pvt. Ltd. making it a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) project.

What are the Advantages of the Yamunotri Temple Ropeway?

  1. Promotion of Religious Tourism: The project aims to make the journey to the holy site more convenient for pilgrims and thus boost religious tourism. The ropeway will connect the summer and winter Dhams of Maa Yamunotri Devi.
  2. Socio-Economic Upliftment: The increased footfall due to better connectivity will potentially lead to social and economic development in the region.
  3. Facility for the Elderly: The high altitude and demanding treks often pose difficulties for senior citizens. The ropeway will make their journey to the holy site easier and more comfortable.
  4. Boosting Soft Power: Improved amenities for pilgrims and foreign tourists will enhance India's soft power on the global stage.
