Unveiling the Adurru Buddhist Site

The Adurru Buddhist Site, excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in 1923, was declared a protected monument in 1955. The site revealed several significant remains and artifacts, some of which are mentioned below.

The Adurru Buddhist site is nestled in the East Godavari District, locally known as Dubaraju Dibba. It is situated on the Western Bank of Vainetaya, a tributary of the Godavari river. The site is approximately 9.5 Kms from the Bay of Bengal in the Mamidikuduru mandal of East Godavari district.

The Significance of Adurru as a Buddhist Site

Historical evidence suggests that the foundation stone of Adurru was laid by Sanghamitra, the daughter of the legendary Emperor Ashoka, during her journey to Sri Lanka. Among the world’s three most renowned Buddhist stupas, the first one was constructed at Adurru in Andhra Pradesh, followed by those in Ranchi and Sarnath.
