Establishment of AARDO

Following the Second World War in the 1950s, most of the Asian and African countries called for comprehensive development in their regions. This led to a discussion between the two continents, where they decided to help each other overcome their challenges.

The idea of creating a platform for Asian countries to discuss their issues was put forth by Dr. Punjabrao S. Deshmukh, India’s Union Minister of Agriculture, and Dr. Hiroshi Nasu, Japan's Ambassador to India. This led to the first East Asian Rural Reconstruction Conference held in Tokyo in August 1955, with twelve countries participating.

Goals of AARDO

AARDO was established with the primary objective of promoting coordinated efforts, exchanging experiences, and implementing cooperative action for the development of rural areas. The organization focuses on fostering cooperation between Asian and African countries to eradicate hunger, thirst, poverty, and illiteracy.

AARDO also aims to recognize the need for mutual cooperation in agriculture and rural development among the Asian-African countries. It works in collaboration with various international organizations for the economic and social welfare of the rural community.

The external relations of India with other countries and organizations are an essential part of the UPSC Syllabus. Candidates preparing for UPSC 2021 should have a clear concept on these topics to secure good marks.
