The UPSC Civil Services Exam is conducted for the recruitment of candidates for a total of 24 posts in the Indian Civil Services. All India Services:

Service Details
Indian Administrative Services:
  • It is one of the three All India Services. 
  • The IAS works for implementation and even formulate government policies. 
  • They are subjects of the central government and even get appointed as secretaries, assistant secretaries for different ministries.
  • They serve as the head of Administration on a district level.
Indian Police Services:
  • The Indian Police Services recruits candidates to occupy the high-ranking posts in the State Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF)
  • The responsibilities of an IPS Officer includes many duties such as Counter-terrorism and Border Policing, Crime prevention, investigation and collection of intelligence, VIP Security, Railway Policing etc. 
  • Their training begins at LBSNAA and SVPNPA with indoor and outdoor subjects as well.
  • The highest-ranking post of an IPS under this designation is the Director-General of Police. 
Indian Forest Services:
  • IFoS is the third pillar of All India Services for Civil Services in India.
  • The highest-ranking Post of an IFoS is the Director-General of Forests under the Central Government.
  • The highest-ranking officer of this designation is the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests under the state government. 
  • The Indian Forest Service Cadre is directly overlooked by the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change.

UPSC Group-A Civil Services Posts:

Indian Foreign Service (IFS)

  • A newly recruited IFS Officer begins their training at LBSNAA. Ther training moves on to Foreign Service Institute, New Delhi.
  • The most popular posts occupied by recruits in IFS are High Commissioner, Ambassadors, Permanent Representative of India at UN, and Foreign Secretary etc. 
  • IFS Officers are responsible for handling all Foreign Affairs of India.
  • A candidate loses their chance to appear for UPSC CSE Exam after getting selected in the UPSC Exams.

Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IAAS)

  • The training for recruits commences at NAAA located in Shimla.
  • This cadre is directly overlooked by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.
  • The key responsibility of IA&AS includes financial auditing of Central Government, State Governments and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS)

  • The Indian Civil Accounts Services functions directly under the Ministry of Finance.
  • The head of the ICAS cadre is the Controller General of Accounts.
  • Their training begins at the National Institute of Financial Management, Faridabad.
  • The recruits are also trained at the Institute of Government Accounts and Finance.

Indian Corporate Law Service (ICLS)

  • The Indian Corporate Law and Services functions directly under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
  • The key responsibility of this service is to govern the corporate sector in India.
  • There is an ICLS Academy at Manesar Campus of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs where the recruits are trained and prepared for their new roles. 
  • Their training at ICLS involves Law, Economics, Finance, and Accounting.

Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS)

  • This Cadre is overlooked by the Ministry of Defence.
  • The training centres where recruits are moved to are CENTRAD, New Delhi, National Academy Of Defence Financial Management Institute, Pune.
  • Their service comes under the  Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Ordnance Factories. The Key responsibility includes auditing defence accounts.

Indian Defence Estates Service (IDES)

  • The primary responsibility of this Service is to manage the army cantonments and estate areas of the Indian Defence.
  • The recruits are trained at the National Institute of Defence Estates in New Delhi.
  • The highest-ranking post of officers holding the designation of IDES is the Director-General of Defence Estates.

Indian Information Service (IIS)

  • After clearing the UPSC Exam, the recruits of this service will be responsible for the management of the media wing of GOI.
  • India Information Services provides a link between Government and the public.
  • The candidates who get selected for the IIS work under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting
  • Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) is the centre where the recruits of the IIS get their initial training.
  • Work Area: DD, PIB, AIR etc.

Indian Ordnance Factories Service (IOFS)

  • The management of Indian Ordnance Factories is handled by the Indian Ordnance Factories Services.
  • IOFS comes under the Ministry of Defence.
  • The Training Center for recruits of IOFS is the National Academy of Defence Production, Nagpur.
  • The initial training period for recruits is 1 year and 3 months.

Indian Communication Finance Services (ICFS)

  • Formerly, this department was known as  Indian Posts and telecommunication accounts and Finance services.
  • The National Institute of financial management, Faridabad is the training centre for newly recruited candidates.
  •  The key responsibility of the cadre is to provide accounting and financial services to the various Indian post and telecommunication departments.

Indian Postal Service (IPoS)

  • The recruits of this service will get training at  Ahmed Kidwai National Postal Academy (RAKNPA) located in Ghaziabad.
  • The primary responsibility of this service is to keep the Indian Postal Services functional. 
  • UPSC  recruits the higher grade officers in the Indian Postal Services.
  • The recruits of this Service will handle different services such as traditional Postal Services, banking, e-commerce etc.
  • The highest-ranking post in Indian Postal Services is Chief Postmaster General.

Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS)

  • The primary job of Indian Railway account services is to maintain and manage the finances and accounts of Indian Railways.
  • The period of training for the recruits would be two years.
  • The candidates will undergo their initial training at the National Academy of direct taxes in Nagpur,  railway Staff College in Vadodara.
  • There are also specialised training institutes, construction organisations,  manufacturing establishments of the Indian Railways and zonal Railways.

Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS)

  • The initial training of recruits if IRPS happens at LBSNAA which further moves on to the National Academy of Direct Taxes, RCVP Noronha Academy of Administration, Dr Marri Channa Reddy Human Resource Development Institute etc.
  • The training is also conducted at the National Academy of Indian Railways located at Vadodara.
  • The key responsibility of IRPS officers includes the management of Human Resources f Indian Railways.
  • This body comes under the Ministry of Railways. 

Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS)

  • The training centre for recruits is Railway Staff College located at Vadodara and the Indian Railway Institute of Transportation Management that is located at Lucknow.
  • This government body is responsible for revenue generation for the Indian Railways.
  • This body is the link between railways, the public and the corporate sector to manage the Operation and Commercial Wings.

Indian Revenue Service (IRS)

  • The primary responsibility of the IRS is the collection of direct and indirect taxes. 
  • The IRS body functions directly under the Ministry of Finance.
  • The training centre for IRS recruits is at LBSNAA. Their further training takes place at NADT Nagpur and the National Academy of Customs, Excise and Narcotics located at Faridabad.

Indian Trade Service (ITS)

  • The primary objective is to maintain the International Trade and Commerce of the country and keep it functioning.
  • Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi is the training centre for recruits at ITS.
  • The ITS  comes under the Ministry of Commerce and is headed by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

Railway Protection Force (RPF)

  • Security to Indian Railway passengers and the protection of property and assets is assured by the Railway Protection Force.
  • The Ministry of Railways manages the Railway Protection Force.
  • Railway Protection Force is a kind of Paramilitary Force.
  • At Jagjivan Ram Railway Protection Force Academy in Lucknow, selected candidates get their training.
  • The highest-ranking post in the Railway Protection Force is Inspector General and the designation is Principal Chief Security Commissioner.

Armed Forces Headquarters Civil Service

  • Armed Forces Headquarters Civil Service is responsible for providing civilian staff, secretarial, clerical, and support services to the headquarters of Indian Armed Forces and Inter-Services Organizations (ISOs).
  • It functions under the Ministry of Defence.

DANICS

  • DANICS stands for Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Civil Service. 
  • It also refers to Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Civil Service.
  • DANICS is responsible for the various administrative functions of the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union territories of India.

DANIPS

  • The acronym DANIPS stands for Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Police Service. 
  • It is also referred to as Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Police Service.
  • The recruits of DANIPS are responsible for the law & order and policing functions of the National Capital, Delhi and the Union Territories.

Pondicherry Civil Service

  • The recruits of Pondicherry Civil Service Posts and shall be governed by the Pondicherry Civil Service Rules of 1967.
  • They will go through a probation period of two years. 
  • The probation period is subject to possible extension.

Pondicherry Police Service

  • The Puducherry Police Service is the law enforcement agency for Puducherry in India.
  • The Puducherry Police Service comes under the direct control of the Department of Home Affairs, Government of Puducherry.
