Physical Requirement for IPS 2022: Check Complete UPSC Eligibility Criteria

IPS Exam is one of the most prestigious exams to crack in the nation. But being an Indian Police Services Officer takes a lot of hard work and stringent physical training. IPS exam is one part of the UPSC Civil Services Examination that is conducted every year and requires hard work and dedication to crack. Apart from the examination, candidates are also required to meet the prescribed physical requirements to be eligible for the post. Selection Procedure

The Selection Process of IPS Exam includes the following stages of examination that candidates need to complete before getting awarded with the designation:

  • UPSC Preliminary Examination, which involves two exams– CSAT and General Studies
  • UPSC Mains Examination
  • Personal Interview Test
  • Physical Test

Candidates appearing for the Mains Examination will have to give a total of 09 Papers, upon clearing which, they will move on to the PIT. These papers will involve one Essay paper, four General Studies Papers, two language papers (qualifying in nature), two optional papers (of the one optional subject chosen by the candidate).

The Merit List will be declared on the basis of the marks obtained by the candidate in both Mains and PIT round. 

Upon clearing all the rounds, the candidates will be called for the Physical Test.

Physical Requirements for Eligibility 

Please take a note of the Physical Requirements as prescribed by the UPSC for IPS Post through the UPSC Examination:

Height 165 cm [For ST (except SC/ OBC) – 160 cm] 150 cm [For  ST (except SC/ OBC)- 145 cm]
Chest Minimum 84 cm. Expansion 5 cm Min 79 cm expansion 5 cm
Eyesight 6/6 or 6/9 distant vision for good eye 6/12 or 6/9 for worst eye. Near vision J1 for good eye. J2 for worst eye

Here are few other requirements that each candidate must be able to fulfil:

Blood Pressure  (High): Age 23 – 123; age 24 – 124; age 25 – 122; age 28 – 124; age 30 – 125; age 32 – 126; age 34 – 127
Hearing Good listening and normal ear cavity; 1000-4000 frequency

Hearing impairment should not be more than 30 decibels

Sight/Colour blindness High standard for the Colorblind test. No inherent night blindness. Vision should be stereoscopic
Speech Candidates should not stutter while speaking.
Female candidates should not be pregnant at the time of the Medical Test

Other Eligibility Criteria

Apart from the Physical Requirements, candidates must also meet the following UPSC CSE eligibility requirements as mentioned in the UPSC Notification:

IPS Age Limit 21 to 32 years (Gen/EWS)

 

21-35 years (OBC)

21-37 years (SC/ST)

21-42 years (PWD)

Educational Qualification for IPS Graduation
Nationality Indian citizens only
Number of attempts  6 attempts for Gen/EWS

 

9 attempts for OBC

Till the age limit for SC/ST

9 attempts for Gen/OBC candidates and unlimited age limit for SC/ST candidates for PWD candidates

IPS Officer Training

Every recruit in the IPS undergoes a probationary period of two years where they are trained and educated for their new role as an IPS Officer. The first part of the Foundation Course is conducted for three months at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie. This is common to all the recruits of the UPSC CSE. After this, IPS recruits go to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad. The recruits undergo district training along with various indoor and outdoor subjects.
