- The Padma Vibhushan holds the distinction of being India's second-highest civilian award. Established on January 2, 1954, the accolade is bestowed upon individuals demonstrating “exceptional and distinguished service”, irrespective of their race, occupation, position, or gender.
- The award's eligibility criteria encompass “service in any field, including service rendered by Government servants”. However, employees of Public Sector Undertakings are generally excluded, with the notable exception of professionals working in the fields of medicine and scientific research.
- The announcement of the Padma Vibhushan awardees is a yearly event that takes place on Republic Day and is officially recorded in The Gazette of India. The award's conferment isn't deemed official until its publication in the Gazette.
- Recipients whose awards have been either revoked or reinstated, both actions requiring the President's authority, are also recorded in the Gazette. In cases where an awardee's name is removed from the register, they are mandated to return their medals. As of 2015, there have been no instances of Padma Vibhushan awards being revoked or restored.
