The Functions of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institution (GANHRI)

1. Facilitates and aids the involvement of National Human Rights Institutions with the United Nations Rights Councils and Treaty Bodies.
2. Encourages collaboration and information exchange among National Human Rights Institutions.
3. Assists in capacity building in association with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCR).
4. Handles the accreditation of National Human Rights Institutions as per the Paris Principles and promotes the role of NHRI’s within the United Nations Organisation and other international agencies.

Levels of Accreditation in GANHRI

1. “A” Voting members – These members fully comply with the Paris Principles and can participate as voting members in international and regional work and meetings of national institutions.
2. “B” Observer members: These members do not comply with the Paris Principles and have not submitted the necessary documents.
3. “C” Non-members: These members do not comply with the Paris Principles and do not have any rights or privileges with the International Coordinating Committee.

Understanding the Paris Principles

The Paris Principles were accepted in 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly and they set the international benchmarks for accrediting NHRI’s by GANHRI.

According to the Paris Principles, NHRI’s should:

1. Protect human rights, which includes receiving, investigating, and resolving complaints, mediating conflicts, and monitoring activities.
2. Promote human rights through education, outreach, training, capacity building, and more.
