An Introduction to the GMRT

The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope is managed by the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), a division of the renowned Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. This incredible project was conceptualized and constructed under the guidance of Prof. Govind Swarup from 1984 to 1996.

The observatory of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope is situated about north of Pune at Khodad. The administrative office, however, is housed in the Savitribai Phule Pune University.

The telescope attracts astronomers from around the globe who use it to study a variety of celestial bodies such as HII regions, galaxies, pulsars, supernovae, the Sun and solar winds.

Recent Developments in the GMRT

  • The GMRT played a crucial role in observing the largest explosion ever recorded in the history of the universe, the Ophiuchus Supercluster explosion, in February 2020.
  • In recognition of its significant technical achievements and excellence, the GMRT was honored with the IEEE Milestone on November 27, 2020.
  • In August 2018, the GMRT discovered the most distant galaxy known to man, located at a staggering distance of 12 billion light-years.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world’s largest technical professional organization committed to advancing technology in all fields related to electrical and electronics engineering.

  • The IEEE Milestones programme recognizes significant technical achievements that have a global or regional impact. This is only the third such IEEE ‘Milestone’ recognition for an Indian contribution.
  • The previous two Indian IEEE Milestones were for the groundbreaking work by Sir J.C. Bose in 1895 on the generation and reception of radio waves (recognized in 2012), and for the ‘scattering of light’ phenomenon observed by Sir C.V. Raman in 1928.
