The Prime Minister of India arrived in Poland, marking it the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 45 years. India and Poland have maintained a strong and cooperative relationship that spans several decades. The bilateral ties between the two countries are rooted in historical connections, shared values, and mutual interests. The relationship encompasses various areas, including political cooperation, economic ties, cultural exchanges, and defense collaboration.

Areas of Cooperation between India and Poland

India and Poland share a deep rooted and dynamic relationship that continues to evolve and is driven by mutual respect and a common shared vision for the future. These are some of the areas where progress has been made in India Poland relations and need more push from both nations so that their common goals can be achieved:

• Political Relations: It was in 1954 when the diplomatic relations between India and Poland were initiated followed by the opening of the Indian Embassy in Warsaw in 1957. The two nations shared similar ideological views, rooted in their mutual opposition to some critical issues like colonialism, imperialism, and racism.
• Economic & Trade Relations: Poland remains India's largest trading and investment partner in Central and Eastern Europe. Between 2013 and 2023, the total bilateral trade with Poland has grown by 192%, rising from US$1.95 billion in 2013 to US$5.72 billion in 2023.
• Trade in the Mining & Energy Sector: India is looking for clean technologies in coal sector. In this regard, cooperation with Poland can be very helpful as Poland has proven expertise in clean coal technologies and intelligent mining. It has significantly contributed to India's mining and power sectors, with collaborative efforts formalized through a 2019 MoU.
• Agro-food Processing: As India has a sizable population who depends on agriculture, Poland’s cooperation can be useful for India. Poland's advanced food processing technologies are well-suited for some flagship centrally sponsored schemes in India such as PM SAMPADA and can generate job opportunities for youth.
• IT/ITeS Sector: IT companies of India and Poland complement each other, with many Indian firms such as Infosys and HCL using Poland as a hub for its different operations in many European countries.
• Cultural and Educational Relations: Poland has a strong Indology tradition with early Sanskrit studies and prominent Indology departments, supported by recent Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) initiatives and Indian professor appointments.
• Consular Relations: Since January 2018, India has an Honorary Consulate in Wroclaw. Apart from that there is a Polish Embassy in New Delhi and the Consulate General in Mumbai. Also, Poland has two Honorary Consulates, one in Kolkata and the other one in Bengaluru.
• Indian Diaspora: Estimated at approximately 25,000, the Indian community in Poland consists of traders who came after the collapse of communism and professionals working with multinational and Indian companies and software/IT businesses.
• Engineering Sector: Polish public sector companies have played a significant and substantial role in development of mining and power sectors in India. It is crucial as it has huge potential to provide job opportunities for youths in India.
