What is Kyhytysuka sachicarum?

Kyhytysuka sachicarum is an extinct species of marine reptiles called ichthyosaurs which existed during the Mesozoic Era. While these marine reptiles dominated the oceans, dinosaurs roamed the Earth's surface. Kyhytysuka sachicarum, whose name is derived from the Colombian indigenous Muisca language meaning "the one that cuts with something sharp," was an apex predator with unique features that distinguished it from the rest of the ichthyosaurs.

Discovery of Kyhytysuka sachicarum?

Kyhytysuka sachicarum was the first ever discovery from fossil deposits of Paja Formation in Colombia, a famous site for the Mesozoic fossils. This particular species was described not so long ago, in 2021, and it caught much attention by its peculiar anatomy and big size. The specific name "sachicarum" indeed refers to the town of Sáchica in Colombia, where the fossil was located. The name Kyhytysuka represents a toothy predator, which means it aptly names this ancient sea hunter.

Physical Characteristics of Kyhytysuka sachicarum

The skull and dentition of Kyhytysuka sachicarum have become highly specialized. In comparison to most ichthyosaurs, the evolution towards more general piscivorous diets in them might have encouraged specializations within those diets while Kyhytysuka's food choice was more hypercarnivorous and allowed it to attack the larger prey than other reptiles or big fish. Kyhytysuka sachicarum is a crucial transitional evolutionary step in the ichthyosaurs, representing the change from more or less general predatory strategy.
