If one state is attacked, all member states are considered to be at war, demonstrating the indivisibility of peace among the members. Similarly, in commercial policy, the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) norm ensures the indivisibility of the trading system.

Diffusion of Reciprocity

Multilateralism fosters a sense of diffused reciprocity among its participants. This principle suggests that there is no immediate expectation of equivalent concessions or obligations, even if there is an exchange of any kind. Instead, a balance is assumed over an indefinite series of exchanges with partner groups. For instance, in a collective security system, there is no expectation for members to compensate for the military resources spent in defending a threatened member country.

Settlement of Disputes

Multilateralism also involves a system for the settlement of disputes. Various mechanisms can be utilized for this purpose, including informal peer reviews or the establishment of a formal body to address grievances. Adherence to the principles of indivisibility and diffusion of reciprocity is crucial for the effective settlement of disputes.

Challenges of Multilateralism

Despite its benefits, multilateralism often faces criticism due to disillusionment with globalization, inability to adapt to new challenges, and lack of compelling narratives to support its concept. Additionally, there have been instances where multilateral institutions have not adhered to the ideal model, leading to controversies and debates.
