The Advent of High-Speed Trains in India

With the Indian economy growing at a rapid pace and the railways being a crucial mode of transportation, the government has drawn up plans to boost the speed of trains. This includes running high-speed trains (with speeds exceeding 300 kmph), semi-speed trains (with speeds ranging from 160 kmph to 200 kmph), introducing faster train sets, and increasing the speed of existing trains.

Aspirants preparing for UPSC Prelims can visit the following links to revise and strengthen their concepts:

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor is set to feature a high-speed train, with financial backing from the Japanese Government. The project will use the Shinkansen high-speed technology. For the execution of this project, the "National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited", a S pecial Purpose Vehicle (SPV) has been created.

The Indian Railways will own 50% of the equity in the SPV. The project is estimated to cost around 1.10 Lakh Crore. The Japanese government is providing a loan covering up to 81% of the project cost, repayable over 50 years with a 15-year moratorium, at a nominal interest rate of 0.1%. The Mumbai to Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, which will span a distance of 508 km, is expected to be completed by 2022.

This project aligns with the dual objectives of "Make In India" and job creation. It is anticipated to stimulate the manufacturing of advanced components and create about 15 lakh jobs in India.

The Shinkansen Technology

The term Shinkansen translates to "new trunk lines", referring to Japan's high-speed rail network. This technology allows the train to attain high speeds while maintaining comfort and safety. Unlike conventional rail lines, Shinkansen routes are exclusively for high-speed trains. This network uses viaducts and tunnels to bypass obstacles, thereby reducing the time taken to cover distances. The use of lighter vehicles minimizes damage to the tracks. These trains feature fast acceleration & deceleration and are electric multiple units.
