NDDB's Impact on Rural Economy

The NDDB played a transformative role in India's rural economy by making dairying a profitable economic activity for millions of milk producers. It also addressed the country's need for self-sufficiency in milk production. The Board reaches out to dairy farmers and helps them establish sustainable livelihoods through other income-generating activities.

  • The NDDB successfully blended the traditional wisdom and knowledge of dairy farmers with modern management practices to capture the milk and milk products market, while also supporting the farmers.
  • The NDDB's most notable achievement is 'Operation Flood', which ran from 1970 to 1996. This operation transformed India into the world's largest milk producer, a feat also known as the White Revolution .
  • The Board has integrated over 1 lakh dairy cooperatives under the 'Anand Pattern', which links the village-level society to the state dairy federation in a three-tier structure.

The NDDB's subsidiaries include Mother Dairy, Indian Immunologicals Ltd., Hyderabad (IIL), Indian Dairy Machinery Company Ltd, Anand (IDMC), and NDDB Dairy Services.
