On 1st September 2021, the Ladakh Union Territory administration declared the Black-Necked Crane as its state bird. Eastern Ladakh is the only known breeding ground for black-necked cranes outside China. This magnificent bird is found in the Changthang plains and is currently under threat due to expanding tourism and feral dogs that prey on their eggs and hatchlings.
