Mathematics Success Tips from IAS Topper Utsav Kaushal

Below are some of the key strategies and insights from IAS topper Utsav Kaushal:

  • It's essential to put in a significant amount of effort to score well in the mathematics optional. The key to success lies in solving as many problems as possible. There's no substitute for hard work and consistent practice.
  • Avoid copying solutions. Try to solve problems independently. Resist the temptation to look at the solution as soon as you come across a challenging problem. You'll learn and retain more by working through problems on your own.
  • Don't skip challenging topics like Abstract Algebra. This topic may seem daunting, but it has been the source of many questions in previous years. With sufficient practice, you can improve your understanding and problem-solving skills in this area.
  • Mechanics and Fluid Dynamics is another crucial topic that needs your attention. Many questions asked in the examination are from this section.
  • Dynamics & Statics is a relatively easier topic, often left for the last-minute study. Utsav suggests starting with this section as it requires practice, regardless of its difficulty level.
  • In the exam, some questions may have multiple parts. If you can't solve the first part, don't skip the entire question. Attempt the parts you can solve, as every mark counts in the UPSC exam.
  • Coordinate Geometry questions usually follow a set pattern. Utsav recommends practicing from 'Analytic Geometry' by PN Chatterjee for this section.
  • The theoretical part of calculus can be time-consuming. If you're running short on time, focus on this section last.

Utsav Kaushal endorses mathematics as a viable optional for candidates with a background in mathematics or engineering. He believes it can be a high-scoring optional, provided the candidate is willing to put in the necessary effort. His impressive score of 356/500 in the optional papers stands as a testament to this.
