Understanding 4G: Features, Network Standards, and Introduction

The fourth generation or 4G, as it is commonly known, is a technology that has revolutionized the field of telecommunications. 4G is the successor of 3G and is based on the standards defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced (IMT Advanced). The term 4G is often associated with the acronym MAGIC, which stands for "Mobile multimedia, Any-where, Global mobility solutions over, Integrated wireless and Customized services."

The ITU states that a 4G network must allow a mobile device to exchange data at 100 Mbps for high mobility communication and 1 Gbps for low mobility communication. The potential and current applications of 4G include enhanced mobile web access, IP telephony, gaming services, high-definition mobile TV, video conferencing, and 3D television.

4G has significantly improved the wireless experience by offering speeds much faster than 3G. It supports interactive multimedia, voice, video, wireless internet, and other broadband services. Technologically, 4G differs greatly from 3G, making it a crucial topic for competitive exams.

The Advent of 4G

The world was first introduced to the fourth generation of mobile technology, 4G, in 2010 to cater to the growing need for faster speeds and better connectivity. Airtel was the pioneer in launching 4G services using TD-LTE technology in Kolkata in 2012. This was followed by the launch of 4G in other cities like Bangalore, Pune, Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula. Subsequently, other companies like Aircel, Vodafone, and RJIO also launched their 4G services in India.
