How AI Helped Find an Antibiotic for a Superbug | UPSC Current Affairs

The world of healthcare has recently witnessed a major breakthrough, thanks to the advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI). A team of scientists from the United States and Canada successfully utilized AI to discover a new and potent antibiotic capable of eradicating a superbug. Artificial intelligence has proven its worth by streamlining and accelerating the typically arduous and lengthy process of identifying the most effective antibiotic chemicals to combat bacteria.

The Role of AI in Discovering a Superbug Antibiotic

The deep learning-guided discovery of an antibiotic targeting Acinetobacter baumannii was an achievement of McMaster University in Canada and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.

  • Discovering the most effective antibacterial compounds to fight bacteria can be a complex and time-consuming endeavor.
  • This is where algorithms come into the picture. The essence of AI lies in feeding vast quantities of data to computers, enabling them to learn on their own and identify patterns and solutions.

This groundbreaking research led to the discovery of nine potential antibiotics, one of which demonstrated remarkable efficacy against A. baumannii, known as abaucin.

Understanding Acinetobacter baumannii

Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative hospital-acquired bacterium known for its multidrug resistance.

  • As per the findings of McMaster University, “A. baumannii is notorious for its resilience, as it can cause pneumonia, meningitis, and wound infections, all of which can potentially be fatal.”
  • In 2017, the World Health Organisation (WHO) labeled this bacterium as one of the world’s most perilous antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Decoding Superbugs

  • A superbug refers to a microorganism that has developed resistance to multiple drugs that were initially effective in treating the diseases caused by these microorganisms.
  • Superbugs are typically bacteria that have evolved to resist drugs. However, they can also be fungi.
  • The rising prevalence of superbugs can be partly attributed to the misuse of antibiotics, leading to increased antibiotic resistance.
  • It is important to note that completely preventing antibiotic resistance is impossible as it is a natural aspect of microbial evolution.
