In the following sections, we provide step-by-step instructions on how to fill the answer booklet for the IAS prelims exam.

Instructions for Filling the UPSC OMR Sheet

It is essential for candidates to exercise extreme caution while marking their answers on the OMR sheet. A single mistake could result in the rejection of an answer or even negative marking. To prevent loss of marks in the UPSC Prelims, candidates should familiarize themselves with the process of filling out the OMR sheet.

The UPSC notification provides the following instructions for marking the answer booklet:

  • Use a BLACK BALL POINT pen to mark your exam centre, subject, and the test booklet series in the appropriate spaces provided on the top of the answer sheet.
  • Encode or mark your booklet series (A/B/C/D), subject code, and roll number in the circles provided.
  • If your test booklet does not mention the booklet series or the answer sheet is not numbered, immediately request a replacement from the invigilator.
  • Any alterations in marking the roll number should be initialed by both the candidate and the invigilator, and countersigned by the supervisor.
  • As soon as the exam begins, check if your test booklet has any missing, unprinted, or torn pages or items. In case of any discrepancies, request a complete replacement of the booklet from the same series and subject.
  • Avoid writing your name or any other unnecessary information in the space provided for rough work on the answer sheet.
  • Do not fold or mutilate the answer sheet in any way.
  • Avoid writing anything on the reverse side of the answer sheet.
  • The OMR sheet will be evaluated by a computer, so exercise extreme caution while marking your answers. Since you cannot erase answers once marked (with a black ball point pen), mark your answers carefully.
  • The Test Booklet contains questions, each with four choices. Mark your answer on the Answer Sheet (OMR Sheet) against the appropriate serial number.
  • Completely darken the circle against the correct choice (a/b/c/d) with a black ball point pen to mark your answer on the answer sheet.
