Bharat Darshan – An Overview | IAS Training | Testbook.com

“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” - Gustave Flaubert

Every aspirant of the prestigious Indian Administrative Services (IAS) knows that a significant part of their training at the esteemed Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie, includes an all-India tour, fondly known as the Bharat Darshan. This eight-week winter study tour is one of the highlights of the training phase that IAS probationers eagerly anticipate. It provides an opportunity for the trainees to travel across India, gaining a deeper understanding of the country's diversity and complexities and witnessing the challenges faced by its citizens first-hand. Engaging Activities during Bharat Darshan

  1. The Bharat Darshan commences in the first week of December, coinciding with the onset of snowfall in Mussoorie, marking an exciting phase of the training.
  2. This tour spans over eight weeks, during which the IAS probationers traverse almost the entire country.
  3. This privilege is exclusive to IAS trainees, unlike other services like IPS, IFS, etc., who have their travels but not as comprehensive as the IAS officers’ Bharat Darshan.
  4. The probationers are typically divided into groups, each led by a Group Leader.
  5. Each group is assigned different locations, and they all return to Mussoorie simultaneously as the Darshan concludes.
  6. The purpose of the tour, as stated by the course handbook at LBSNAA, is “to expose officer trainees to a broad spectrum of organizations and situations they will encounter during their careers and also introduce them to the diversity of our cultural heritage.”
  7. During the tour, the officer trainees are attached to various organizations like the Army, NGOs, etc.
  8. Here, they gain first-hand experience of the work carried out by these institutions. This helps them comprehend the challenges faced by the people and the authorities striving to assist them.
  9. The trainees are exposed to diverse situations, from luxury hotel stays to sleeping on the floor in simple huts.
  10. They visit both rural and urban areas, providing them with a broad perspective.
  11. They interact with prominent personalities who share insights about their work.
  12. The probationers get a chance to appreciate India's diversity as they travel across the country.
  13. They are also exposed to potentially dangerous situations in regions like Kashmir and other conflict-ridden parts of the country.
  14. Most trainees consider this journey as a transformative and humbling experience.

The Bharat Darshan aims to help the IAS officer-trainees appreciate India's diversity, richness, and challenges. It also focuses on developing leadership qualities and survival instincts in them. So, are you ready to take up this challenge? If yes, intensify your IAS preparation and don't stop until you achieve your goal.
