Island Development Agency (IDA) - Overview, Meetings and Development Plans

What is the Island Development Agency (IDA)?

The IDA was formed in 2017 under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Its primary responsibility is to oversee the comprehensive development of islands. The Home Minister of India serves as the Chairman of the IDA, and the CEO of NITI Aayog is the convener. The other members of the IDA include the Secretary of Tourism, Tribal affairs, Home Secretary, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, and Cabinet Secretary.

The National Institution for Transforming India – NITI Aayog is tasked with guiding the sustainable development of the islands.

Sixth Meeting of the Island Development Agency

The Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, chaired the sixth meeting of the IDA on January 13, 2020. The meeting was primarily focused on reviewing the progress of the "Holistic development of islands" program.

Some key initiatives discussed during the meeting included the promotion of sustainable development goals on the identified Islands, job creation through tourism and seafood exports, and infrastructure development in Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands.

The meeting also addressed connectivity plans, such as improving sea and air connectivity with the islands, digital connectivity through submarine optical fibre cable, and the promotion of IT-based and other MSMEs in the islands.
