National Integration: Idea of India and Role of Indian National Congress - Testbook

This article will delve into the substantial role of the Indian National Congress (INC) in promoting national integration and shaping the concept of India. This topic holds significant value for the UPSC exam , particularly for the GS I and essay papers.

To comprehend the concept of India, it is crucial to understand the principles that fueled the struggle for independence. Additionally, it is important to recognize the challenges that India faced, some of which are remnants from our colonial past, while others are inherited from our history. The Congress movement of the late 19th and early 20th century, along with the roles of political leaders from both INC and the opposition, are significant. This topic will cover the following subtopics:

  1. The concept of India that fueled the freedom struggle
  2. The Congress Movement
  3. The roles of political leaders from INC and opposition
  4. The Constitution of India and its contribution to the concept of India
  5. The uniform civil, military, and judicial administration inherited from the British
  6. The role of Planning and Finance Commission
  7. Railways and Communication
  8. Education System
  9. Entertainment, Sports, Literature
  10. Middle class, Intellectuals, Labour class
  11. Press, Media, Multinational Companies, etc.

India, a land known for its diversity, has always been united, even before and just after independence. Despite the wide range of religions, languages, cultures, and regions, there has been a common bond connecting people from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Arunachal Pradesh to Gujarat. Even with the disparities of gender, class, and caste, India has managed to hold its unity. The Constitution of India has played an integral role in safeguarding the interests of all diverse groups and narrowing the gaps between different classes, castes, and genders. Various state governments, especially Kerala, have implemented schemes to uplift the status of women and reduce gender discrimination.

The Congress Movement

The Congress Movement, both before and after Gandhi's era, played a pivotal role in shaping the concept of India. The earliest Congress leaders held sessions in Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, and Allahabad, symbolizing their belief in a pan-India idea. The INC was instrumental in spreading the concept of India to rural areas. Key movements that bolstered the idea of India include:

  1. Swadeshi Movement
  2. Khilafat Movement
  3. Non- Cooperation Movement
  4. Civil Disobedience Movement
  5. Quit India Movement
  6. Various Gandhian Programs

Leaders like B.R. Ambedkar and Jyotiba Phule have significantly contributed to bringing marginalized sections into the mainstream of Indian society through various social reform movements and educational programs.

The collective effort from the late 19th century has led to a movement that transcends individuals or parties. Leaders like Gandhi, Nehru, and Maulana Azad , who were born and raised in different parts of the country, and sometimes even outside the Indian subcontinent, reflected an outlook towards an inclusive India that did not focus on any specific region. Their all-Indian perspective was instrumental in shaping the future of India as one nation.
