Maharashtra Public Service Commission(MPSC) recruits eligible candidates for “Officer Posts” in various departments and subordinate services under Government of Maharashtra through civil services examination also known as “Rajyaseva”. MPSC Selection Process - Step-by-Step Process

As mentioned before, Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) conducts various examinations for recruitment to the state civil services, administrative services, and other allied services. The selection process for MPSC exams typically involves a preliminary examination, followed by a main examination and an interview. The preliminary examination consists of objective-type questions, and those who qualify this stage move on to the main examination, which consists of subjective-type questions. The final selection is made based on the performance of the candidates in the main examination and the interview. The selection process is rigorous and competitive, and candidates are advised to prepare thoroughly for the examination.

MPSC Preliminary Exam

It starts with the Preliminary Examination, in which candidates need to appear for an Offline MCQ Test of 400 marks divided into 2 papers of 200 marks each and 2 hours time allotted for each paper. Candidates need to appear for both the papers to qualify the prelims examination. The syllabus of Paper 1 consists of General Studies and Current Affairs with special reference to the state of Maharashtra.

Key Points to Remember:

  • Candidates must obtain a minimum of 33% in the MPSC Preliminary Examination to be eligible for the MPSC Main Examination
  • Both the Paper 1 and Paper 2 comprise 200 marks each
  • Time duration of each paper is 2 hours
  • Candidates will lose 1/4th mark for every incorrect answer
  • All the questions are set in Marathi and English
  • The marks of Prelims will be counted only for shortlisting the aspirants for the MPSC Mains exam.

MPSC Main Examination 

The next stage is the MPSC Main Examination, which is Descriptive in nature. Candidates need to appear in 6 papers. The MPSC Main Examination carries a total of 800 marks. The syllabus of mains examination resembles the syllabus of prelims with the difference based on in-depth knowledge of the candidate in any particular topic.

Key Points to Remeber:

  • The objective-type questions carry a negative marking of 1/4th for every wrong answer
  • The questions of decision making in Paper II feature no negative marking
  • In every MPSC Main Examination paper, the qualifying marks for General and reserved category candidates are 45 marks and 40 marks, respectively

MPSC Interview

The last stage of the MPSC Selection Process is the Inteview or the Personality Test, where candidates (after qualifying the MPSC Main Examination) need to appear before the commission. Candidates will be tested on the basis of their mental ability, decision making ability, problem solving ability, awareness of the current events of the country and with special reference to Maharashtra.

After successfully completing all the three steps of MPSC Selection Process, candidates will be called for Document Verification and Medical Test to check whether they fulfill all the eligibility criteria of selection as on the date of notification or not. Candidates must keep all their testimonials and other relevant documents (like caste certificates, income proof, marriage certificate, etc.) ready.
