UPSC Mains 2025 Exam Schedule is OUT! The UPSC CSE Mains 2025 is all set to commence from 22 August, 2025 onwards and will continue for 05 days., that is, 22, 23, 24, 30 and 31 August, 2025. A total of 14161 candidates have qualified the Prelims 2025 conducted on 25th May, 2025 and will now be appearing for the UPSC Mains 2025. UPSC CSE 2026 Notification will be released on 14 January, 2026 as per the official UPSC Calendar 2026 released on 15 May, 2025. UPSC Mains Hall Ticket 2025 Out Soon!

The Union Public Service Commission will soon release the official UPSC Mains Hall Ticket 2025, tentatively in the 2nd week of August, 2025. The UPSC e-admit card for the Civil Services Prelims Exams was released on 13th May, 2025. The admit card is an important document issued by the UPSC for appearing in the Civil Services Prelims, Mains and Interview. Details such as the UPSC exam date 2025, UPSC Exam Timing, venue and guidelines to be followed on exam day will be printed on the Admit Card. Candidates must download their e-admit card well in advance to avoid last-minute hassles. No candidate will be allowed to enter the exam center without a valid UPSC CSE Admit Card. The admit card copy acts as a proof for identifying candidates appearing for the prestigious Civil Services Exam.

UPSC Civil Services Vacancies 2025

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced 979 vacancies for recruitment through the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2025. These vacancies cover various prestigious posts and services such as IAS, IPS, IFS, and IRS, among others. This year’s vacancies show a slight decrease compared to the previous year, where 1,056 positions were announced for UPSC CSE 2024. 

UPSC Mains Registration 2025

UPSC Mains DAF-1 2025 is out on the official website @upsc.gov.in from 16 June, 2025 onwards. Candidates who have qualified the Prelims will now be appearing for the Mains from 22 August, 2025 onwards. The last date to fill the DAF-1 is 25th June, 2025. UPSC Online Registration 2025 began on 22nd January, 2025 for the Civil Services Examination (CSE) along with the release of the UPSC Notification 2025. The online UPSC Application Form was available on the official UPSC website @upsc.gov.in from 22 January, 2025 onwards. The last date to complete the UPSC online application form and the pay the application fee was 21st February, 2025. Candidates must keep themselves updated with the UPSC Application Form dates to complete the registration process well in advance before the deadline.

How to Apply Online for UPSC Civil Services 2025?

Only those candidates who are eligible as per the requirements given above can register for this exam. If you are looking to learn how to apply for this exam, follow the steps given below –

Step 1 – Visit the Official Website

Click on the direct link provided above to go to the online registration portal. Alternatively, visit the official UPSC Online Recruitment Application (ORA) page for carrying out the registration process.

Step 2 – Online Registration

In Part - I registration, candidates will have to fill in all the personal information like name, age, address, etc.

Step 3 – Corrections in Online Application

After the completion of this section, candidates must ensure/double-check that they have filled in all details correctly. Corrections cannot be made after clicking on the submit button.

Step 4 – Uploading of Documents

In Part - II registration candidates have to submit all the requisite documents, namely; educational certificates, ID proof, age relaxation if applicable, photograph, signature, payment details, and declaration. (Photograph & Signature should be uploaded in JPG format).

Step 5 – Selection of Exam Centre

Candidates must also choose the exam center they wish to write the examination.

Step 6 – Final Submit

Candidates can finally click on the “I Agree” button and submit the application form after filling in all the details. A Registration Number will be provided to the candidates, make sure to keep it safe and also take copies of the application form for future reference.

UPSC Civil Services Eligibility 2025

Along with the official UPSC CSE notification, the Union Public Service Commission has also released the UPSC Civil Services Eligibility Criteria. All candidates must fulfill all the eligibility requirements in order to be shortlisted for the various posts under the Civil Services Exam. The eligibility criteria for the UPSC Civil Services exam is as follows.

  • In terms of education, candidates must hold a degree from a recognized university or its equivalent. The minimum age to appear for the exam is 21 years while the maximum age is 32 years as on August 1 of the year of examination. 
  • There are age relaxations provided for candidates belonging to reserved categories like SC, ST and OBC. 
  • Candidates must be citizens of India or subject of Nepal, Bhutan, Tibetan refugees or persons of Indian origin migrated from certain African countries. 
  • The number of attempts allowed for general candidates is 6, for OBC it is 9 and for SC/ST category, there is no limit on number of attempts till the prescribed age limit.

UPSC Selection Process 2025

The selection process for the Civil Services exam takes place over three stages – Prelims, Mains and Interview. Each stage is a gradual filtering process to select the most suitable candidates for the coveted IAS, IFS, IPS and other Central Services. Let us look at the detailed UPSC CSE Selection Process below –

Prelims (Phase-1)

The UPSC CSE Prelims is a screening test consisting of two objective papers of 200 marks each – General Studies and the CSAT Exam. Candidates have to qualify the UPSC Prelims 2025 by obtaining minimum marks separately in each paper. The papers are designed to shortlist around 12-15 times the number of vacancies. Important highlights of the UPSC CSE Prelims paper are –

  • Paper I is the General Studies test which evaluates candidates’ General Knowledge/Studies and Awareness.
  • Paper II tests aptitude through questions on comprehension, interpersonal skills etc.
  • The Prelims is conducted for a total of 400 marks, with each paper carrying 200 marks.
  • The duration of both GS and CSAT papers is 2 hours each.

Mains (Phase-II)

Candidates who qualify the UPSC Prelims 2025 will be called to appear for the second stage of the selection process, i.e. Mains. It consists of 7 Descriptive papers including two Language papers, 1 Essay paper, 4 General Studies papers, and two Optional papers. Only the candidates who clear the Prelims will be allowed for Mains. Important highlights of the UPSC CSE Mains are as follows –

  • Written exam of 1750 marks in 9 papers held in August-September
  • The papers include General Studies, Essay, Language and optional subjects
  • The duration of each of the papers will be 3 hours.
  • Questions will be both of objective-type and descriptive type.
  • There is a negative marking in the objective type paper where 1/3rd of marks will be deducted for wrong answers.

Interview (Phase-III)

Candidates are called for the Interview, which is the final stage of the selection process, in the ratio of 1:5. The following are some of the important details for this final selection stage –

  • Interview is of 275 marks with no minimum qualifying marks
  • Conducted in January-February by UPSC board members
  • Candidates are judged for their intelligence, manner, alertness of mind etc.
  • Final merit list and selection done basis marks of candidates in the Mains and Interview

UPSC CSE Syllabus

The UPSC Civil Services Syllabus is different for the Prelims and Mains stages. As the UPSC 2025 Prelims exam date is out, candidates preparing for the UPSC IAS Exam must carefully go through the entire syllabus and plan their preparation accordingly.

The starting monthly basic pay for an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer is Rs. 56,100. The gross monthly salary ranges from Rs. 56,000 to approximately to Rs. 1,50,000. During the initial two-year training period, IAS officers receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 56,100. The maximum salary for an IAS officer can reach up to Rs. 2,50,000, particularly for those holding the esteemed position of Cabinet Secretary. These figures represent the current salary structure for IAS officers, reflecting the various stages of their careers and responsibilities.

UPSC Civil Services Cut Off

The UPSC announces category-wise cut-off marks after each of the Prelims and Mains exams. The cut-off varies each year based on the difficulty level of the paper and number of vacancies. It is the minimum marks required to qualify for the next phase. The UPSC CSE Cut Off of prelims is based on the GS Paper 1 while the Mains cut-off helps shortlist candidates for the interview round.
