Employing Relevant Terminologies
Although the Ethics paper may seem general, it is guided by a specific syllabus. (Refer to the

). To align your answers with the requirements of the paper, use appropriate terminologies – specific terms that demonstrate your knowledge of the subject. Your paper should not read like a generic essay or a public administration paper. Some examples of ethics terminologies include
professional ethics, moral reasoning, empathy, respect for diversity, human dignity, compassion, diligence, bureaucratic inertia, ethical courage, moral turpitude, probity, esprit de corps, morality, consequentialism, moral ambiguity, equanimity,
and so on.
Empathy and Perspective-Taking
Ethics case studies often present a situation with a central character facing an ethical dilemma. In these scenarios, it's crucial to empathise with this character. Put yourself in their shoes and consider the issue from their perspective. This approach will be more effective if you practice with various case studies.
Distinguishing Between Ethics and Law
When answering ethics questions, it's important to understand the distinction between ethicality and legality. Ethical behavior doesn't necessarily entail breaking the law, but sometimes, the legal course of action may not be ethically right. The key is to think creatively and strike a balance between legality and ethicality. Therefore, when making decisions, you should be able to differentiate between ethical and legal considerations.
Questioning the Scenario
As you begin to solve case studies, ask questions about the situation. What is the core issue? Who are the affected parties? What aspects of the work or organization are impacted? What are the potential courses of action? What risks are involved? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option, and so on?
By following these general guidelines, you can tackle case studies in the UPSC Mains GS Paper IV with greater confidence. Case studies need not be daunting. With a systematic approach and a clear framework, you can devise effective solutions.
