Key Objectives

BharatGen will develop an Indianized sovereign, multimodal, multilingual AI ecosystem catering to the Indian linguistic and cultural setup. It aims to build scale, India-centric data to control data sovereignty and the apparent representation of every group. It stimulates the development, research, and cooperation in academia, startups, and industry by providing open-source AI models. The initiative aims to achieve digital inclusivity by incorporating all 22 scheduled Indian languages in advanced AI systems.

  • Make an AI ecosystem democratic and inclusive based on Indian languages and cultural values.
  • Create ethical AI tools accessible across various social groups and geographical locations.
  • The applications should support the regions in such vital areas as healthcare, governance, education, and agriculture.
  • Inspire entrepreneurship, innovation and research—Energise AI in India.
  • Promote data sovereignty by using local Indian datasets for training models.
  • Provide multilingual and multimodal AI services that adapt to the diverse Indian language landscape.
  • Enable data-efficient learning for Indian languages with scarce digital resources by leveraging innovative training methods.

BharatGen: Core Features

BharatGen focuses on being an Indian-specific version of multilingual, multimodal AI with the ability to process text data, speech input, translation, and vision tasks across several Indian languages correctly, based on the cultures. Its country-specific models are trained on datasets reflecting the linguistic and social diversity of the modelled country.

  • Multimodal capabilities: BharatGen integrates text, speech, and image processing, enabling diverse AI functionalities.
  • Multilingual support: The model caters to 22 Indian languages, including many regional dialects often neglected by global AI models.
  • India-centric datasets: Unlike global LLMs, BharatGen uses curated Indian data to capture cultural contexts and linguistic nuances accurately.
  • Open-source ecosystem: BharatGen promotes collaboration through open-source foundational models, hackathons, and research programs, facilitating affordable AI innovation for startups and academia.
  • Ethical and inclusive AI design: Ensures that AI technologies do not leave vulnerable and rural communities behind.
  • Focus on data-efficient learning: Efficiently develops AI capabilities for languages with limited digital presence through collaboration with academic experts and fundamental research.
  • Collaborative framework: Involves government bodies, academic institutions like IIT Bombay, startups, and global AI experts, aiming to foster a vibrant generative AI community in India.
  • Public good orientation: The generated AI solutions work towards social equity, cultural preservation, and inclusive technology development for citizens across India.

How To Use BharatGen?

BharatGen is accessible through its official platform or API to perform work such as text generation, translation, and Indian language speech processing. It contains models that can be adapted and implemented in an open-source. environment

  • Applications are being developed by the consortium—spanning IITs and institutions—for specific domains like telemedicine and e-governance.
  • Tools like "e-vikrAI" enable non-English e-commerce with auto-generated, localised content from images and descriptions.
  • General public access details are yet to be announced; rollout is expected to expand across ministries, startups, universities, and rural institutions.

Alignment with Atmanirbhar Bharat Vision

The BharatGen aligns with India's Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) vision of relying less on foreign AI technologies and making an ecosystem of home-grown AI. It was based on indigenous data, support of local languages, and open source development, enhancing technological sovereignty and innovation capability in India. Democratizing access to AI and calibrating its models to specifically Indian needs means that BharatGen can enable the startup, industry, and government sectors in India to take advantage of this capability, strengthening the Indian AI industry and helping to achieve "Make in India" in the field of technology.

Data-Efficient Learning

One crucial technological issue in BharatGen is the insufficiency of Indian languages regarding digital data. This project focuses on data-efficient model training, which offers models that teach well with smaller amounts of data. This will be crucial to smaller languages and dialects that cannot be written off since they do not have wide digital footprints. Research with the participation of academic institutions leads to the creation of such efficient algorithms, which ensure that devices developed by BharatGen are scalable and reliable even with limited information resources.

Future Roadmap

The BharatGen project is set to last two years of development, where important milestones will continue up to July 2026. The roadmap entails:

  • Development and experimentation with multilingual, multimodal AI models tailored to Indian needs.
  • Creation and expansion of Bharat Data Sagar, a vast repository of India-centric datasets.
  • Establishing AI benchmarks and standard protocols relevant to Indian languages and societal use cases.
  • Scaling AI adoption across industries and public service initiatives, particularly in healthcare, education, and governance.
  • Conducting hackathons, training programs, and collaborations with global AI experts to foster innovation and research talent development.
  • Supporting integration of BharatGen-powered AI in national initiatives like CPGRAMS (Citizen-centric grievance redressal) and AI-powered telemedicine services.
